I'm looking for a free utility to change white balance in Canon CR2 RAW files, similar to Nikon ViewNX/ViewNX 2 for NEF files. Is there an official Canon option, or a good free alternative?

Canon bodies comes with Digital Photo Professional, Canon's RAW converter which has White Balance adjustments (as well as plenty of other settings as well). The downside is that it's not free, per-se. I'm pretty sure you need to have the original software disk that comes with your Canon body in order to use the updates which are provided on Canon's website. So there is no direct link to download a standalone version of DPP.

There are ways to work around Canon's silly restriction, but I believe it's outside the scope of this question (though google is your friend).

Yes. Canon’s own RAW software is Digital Photo Professional (DPP), which can adjust white balance and other RAW settings for CR2 files. It’s typically available to Canon camera owners rather than as a completely unrestricted standalone free download, and access may depend on your camera model, serial number, or included software media.

If you want fully free alternatives, community members recommended:

  • UFRaw (standalone or as a GIMP plugin)
  • RawTherapee (free and open source)

So the short answer is: Canon does offer DPP for CR2 editing, and if you specifically want a no-cost general download, RawTherapee or UFRaw are good options for white balance adjustment.
