On my Olympus TG-4, a startup overlay appears for a few seconds showing hands pointing at the camera from different directions. It blocks the view briefly, and I couldn't find a clear explanation in the manual. What does this icon mean, and is there a way to stop it from appearing?

Alright, I think I figured it out. This is specific to Snow mode which allows for gloved operation of the camera. From the manual:
- Tap the right or left side of the camera body once. • The picture mode selection screen is displayed.
- Tap the right or left side of the camera body to select a function.
- Tap the back of the camera body twice to confirm your selection.
Take a picture: Tap the back of the camera twice (Only for the [Snow] mode).

Generated from our catalog & community — verify before relying on it.
That screen is the TG-4’s tapping-operation guide for Snow mode. In Snow mode, the camera supports gloved use by letting you tap the camera body instead of using buttons:
- tap the left or right side of the body to bring up/select functions
- tap the back twice to confirm
- tap the back twice to take a picture in Snow mode
So the startup message is simply reminding you of those controls. If you don’t want to see it, switch out of Snow mode to another shooting mode. The provided answer does not mention a separate setting to disable only that message while staying in Snow mode.
