What’s the difference between the Olympus LG-1 and FD-1 macro ring accessories for the TG-4?

I’m considering an Olympus Tough TG-4 for its rugged design and close-up shooting. Olympus offers two front-mounted macro lighting accessories: the older LG-1 and the newer FD-1. They appear to work differently, with the LG-1 looking more like a light guide and the FD-1 more like a reflector/diffuser. What are the practical differences between them on the TG-4, including compatibility, shooting distance, underwater use, and any pros/cons for macro photography?

Some comparisons: FD-1 is compatible with only TG-4 (Firmware update is required) and the TG-5. The shooting distance is 2 - 30 cm and is usable underwater.

LG-1 is compatible TG-5, TG-4, TG-3, TG-2, TG-1. The shooting distance is 1 - 10 cm and is not usable underwater.

A interesting Olympus website is: http://cameras.olympus.com/tg4fd1review/en/ This goes into detail mostly about the FD-1, but there is a bit about the FD-1 vs. FG-1.

Yes—these two accessories are different in both design and use.

The LG-1 is essentially a light-guiding ring for close macro work. It works at very short distances, about 1–10 cm, and is compatible with more Tough models: TG-1, TG-2, TG-3, TG-4, and TG-5. Based on the provided info, it is not usable underwater.

The FD-1 is the newer option and is more limited in compatibility: TG-4 (with a firmware update) and TG-5. Its working distance is broader, about 2–30 cm, and it can be used underwater.

So the main practical trade-offs are:

  • LG-1: wider camera compatibility, optimized for very close macro distances, but no underwater use.
  • FD-1: works over a longer shooting range and underwater, but fits fewer models and may require a firmware update on the TG-4.

If your priority is the closest possible macro on multiple older Tough cameras, the LG-1 makes sense. If you want more flexibility in shooting distance and underwater macro on a TG-4/TG-5, the FD-1 is the better match.
