I’m referring to the PC sync connection used between a camera and an electronic flash. What do the letters “P” and “C” stand for in “PC sync terminal”?

It stands for "Prontor-Compur connection":
"Prontor" has its origins in the Italian word "pronto", meaning ready (and was a leaf shutter made by Alfred Gauthier). "Compur" is derived from the word "compound" (the "Compound" was a long-lived series of leaf shutters made by Friedrich Deckel).

“PC” stands for Prontor-Compur. The term comes from two classic leaf-shutter brands whose flash-sync connector style became a standard. In photography, a PC sync terminal is simply the connector used to trigger a flash from the camera or shutter.
