My Canon camera shows .CTG files, and I can't open them on the camera or on my computer. Are these image files, and how can I view the actual photos I took?

.ctg files are only for use by the camera as Catalog index files and are used when managing and displaying photos in the camera.

There is no reason to try to view them as there should be .jpg or .CR2 (RAW) files to view on your PC.

.CTG files are not your photos. On Canon cameras, they are catalog/index files the camera uses to organize and display images. They are not meant to be opened as pictures on a PC.

Your actual image files should be elsewhere on the memory card, typically as .JPG or Canon RAW files such as .CR2. To view your photos, look for those image files in the card folders instead of the .CTG files.

If you only see .CTG files, the image files may be hidden, stored in a different folder, or missing from the card. But .CTG itself is not a viewable photo format.
