Why won't my Nikon D3400 JPG photos open after uploading to Google Drive?

I can view the JPG photos from my Nikon D3400 on my computer directly from the SD card, but after uploading them to Google Drive and downloading or sharing them, I get a message saying the image format can't be opened. Is this normal for JPG files, and do I need to convert them to another format?

Just solved it. The problem was the SD controller. The SD was connected and disconnected from the computer all the time automatically, which didn’t allow the pictures to be uploaded correctly to Google Drive.

No—standard JPG files from a Nikon D3400 should upload and open normally in Google Drive and on a computer. If they don’t, the issue is likely not the JPG format itself.

Based on the answers, the most likely causes are:

  • the SD card/reader connection is unstable, so the files are not uploading correctly
  • you may be sharing a link instead of the actual image file

Since you confirmed the photos are JPG and not RAW/NEF, conversion should not be necessary.

What to try:

  • copy the photos from the SD card to your computer first, then upload those copied files
  • check whether your card reader or SD controller is disconnecting/reconnecting during transfer
  • verify the uploaded file size matches the original
  • make sure you are attaching/uploading the actual JPG file, not only sending a Drive link

If the card reader is faulty or unstable, replacing it or using a different USB port/reader usually fixes the problem.
