I import NEF raw files from my Nikon D850 to my MacBook and can view/edit them in Apple Photos. But when I try to save or copy them to an external drive, Google Drive, or another folder, they end up as JPEGs. How do I back up the original NEF files so they stay in NEF format?

If by "view and edit them within the Photo directory" you mean you're using the Photos app to open and edit your NEF files, then simply use the File → Export → Export Unmodified Original... to copy the NEF files to another drive.

If you imported the files into Apple Photos, don’t use a normal export if you want to keep the raw files unchanged. In Photos, select the images and use:

File → Export → Export Unmodified Original

That exports the original NEF files rather than JPEG conversions. Standard export options from Photos often create edited/rendered files such as JPEGs, while “Export Unmodified Original” preserves the original raw format for backup to another folder, external drive, or cloud-synced location.
