Should I use TTL or manual flash for 1:1 macro with a Nikon SB-900 and softbox?

I’m shooting 1:1 macro with a Nikon SB-900 in a softbox and want to know which flash mode is best. Should I use TTL, or set the flash to manual and adjust power for each shot? I’m looking for the most practical approach for this setup.

Should i simply set it to "M" and adjust it on each picture depending on the results, or should i use TTL?

There's not a single correct answer here other than do what works for you. If TTL gives you results that you like, great! That's what it's there for, right? Otherwise, manual mode is fine -- adjust parameters like the flash power, flash zoom, and distance to get the lighting you want. The point of manual mode is to let you set the flash the way you want when TTL isn't cutting it.

There isn’t one universally “best” mode for macro here—it depends on which gives you the results you want.

TTL is a good starting point if it gives you consistent exposure and saves time. That’s what it’s designed for.

Manual flash is the better choice when TTL isn’t giving reliable or repeatable results, or when you want full control. In manual mode, adjust flash power, flash zoom, and the flash-to-subject distance until the lighting looks right.

A practical approach is:

  • Start with TTL for convenience.
  • If exposures vary too much or the lighting isn’t what you want, switch to manual.
  • Once your setup is fixed, manual often makes it easier to keep results consistent from shot to shot.

So: use TTL if it works well for your setup; use manual when you need more control or consistency.
