Should I transport my DSLR with the lens attached or removed?

I’m new to interchangeable-lens cameras and traveling with a Canon 60D and 18-55mm kit lens. Is it better to carry the camera with the lens attached, or remove the lens and use the body cap? Also, if I later carry extra lenses or a flash, what’s the best way to pack everything safely?

Keeping the lens on is usually fine, unless your luggage will be subjected to unusually rough treatment, in which case separating the camera body / lens and carefully padding each would be preferable.

For transporting multiple lenses, flash etc. a purpose built camera bag is the clear choice. These come in backpack and case forms. See also:

For normal travel, it’s usually fine—and often preferable—to carry the camera with the lens attached. That keeps the setup ready to use and reduces how often you remove the lens, which helps minimize dust getting into the camera body.

If the camera will be exposed to unusually rough handling, separating the body and lens and padding each piece can offer extra protection.

If you add more lenses, a flash, or other accessories, a dedicated camera bag or backpack with padded compartments is the best solution. These bags keep gear organized, protected, and easy to access while moving around.

In short: lens attached is generally best for everyday transport; remove it only when needed for space or for extra protection in rough conditions.
