What should I do with a tethered lens cap so it doesn’t make noise while shooting video?

I use a compact digital camera with a lens cap attached by a tether so I don’t lose it. The problem is that while recording video, the cap swings and taps the camera, creating unwanted ticking sounds in the audio. What’s the best way to handle or store the lens cap while shooting?

I highly recommend detaching it from the camera and storing it in a bag or a pocket while you are using your camera.
It swings around too much and it gets in the way a lot.
Having the take the cap off and put it back on also slows you down. So, once you have taken it off, only put it back on the camera when you are 100% sure you won't be needing your camera for a fairly extended period of time. For me, I usually do that no earlier than when I am packing up and leaving the place.

The simplest fix is not to let the cap dangle while filming. Remove it and put it in a pocket or camera bag while you’re actively shooting. Many photographers make this a habit so they always know where the cap is and it won’t swing, get in the way, or be picked up by the microphone.
If you want to keep it attached to your gear, a cap holder on the neck/shoulder strap can work better than tethering it directly to the camera body, since it reduces swinging against the camera. A DIY holder may also work.
In general, only put the cap back on when you’re done shooting for a while or packing up. That avoids extra fumbling and prevents noise during video recording.
