Can I tether a Canon EOS 550D/T2i to a laptop and view images as I shoot?

I have a Canon EOS 550D (Rebel T2i) and want to see images on my laptop while shooting. Is tethered shooting possible with this camera, and do I need any special cable or software? Also, I mentioned “manual zoom” — I may actually mean checking focus/composition while shooting.

There is free software that actually comes with your camera that can do this, its called EOS Utility, you can also download it from here.

In addition to that you can also use the Tethered shooting option in Lightroom 3

Yes. Your Canon EOS 550D/T2i can be connected to a laptop for tethered shooting and live view using Canon EOS Utility, the free software that comes with the camera. Through its remote shooting/live view functions, you can view the scene on your computer, capture images, and adjust settings like shutter speed, aperture, and ISO from the PC.

You do not need a special cable—just the standard mini-USB cable supplied with the camera.

If you use Adobe Lightroom, tethered shooting is also available there according to the community answers.

One important clarification: on Canon EOS cameras, zoom is always manual on the lens. Tethering software does not control lens zoom. If your real goal is focusing precisely, you may not need a laptop at all: the camera’s own Live View with maximum magnification on the rear LCD is useful for critical manual focus.
