I have a Nikon D5000 and want to protect the camera mount when the lens is removed. What is the correct name for the cap that fits on the front of the camera body with no lens attached?

You want a "body cap".
Specifically the Nikon BF-1A or BF-1B, or a generic equivalent.

It’s called a body cap. On Nikon DSLRs like the D5000, Nikon’s versions are commonly named BF-1A or BF-1B, and generic Nikon F-mount body caps are also available. A body cap protects the lens mount and helps keep dust out when no lens is attached.
