My Nikon D90 powers on and otherwise seems to work normally, but the rear LCD only displays horizontal lines. It does not show photos, menus, or any other content, and the screen has no visible cracks or scratches. What is the likely cause, and is there any practical fix?

...how can this be fixed?

By spending a lot more than a D90 is worth in 2025 to have a professional camera repair person look at it.

Since you've got nothing to lose, start taking it apart (google "how to take apart Nikon D90"). You might get lucky and once you get the back off early in the process find that it's only a loose ribbon cable between the LCD and the main board.

This usually points to a hardware fault in the rear display path rather than a settings issue. Based on the symptoms, likely causes are a failed LCD, a bad LCD connection, or a loose/damaged ribbon cable between the screen and the main board.

A professional repair shop could diagnose it, but on an older D90 the repair cost may exceed the camera’s value. If you’re comfortable working on electronics and accept the risk, the most practical thing to check is whether an internal ribbon cable has come loose after removing the back cover. If the cable is firmly seated and the screen still only shows lines, the LCD module or related circuitry likely needs replacement.

So the realistic options are:

  1. Professional repair, if the camera has enough value to you.
  2. DIY inspection for a loose ribbon cable.
  3. Replace the body if repair isn’t economical.
