Nikon D7000 mode dial is misaligned and selects the wrong mode

My Nikon D7000’s top mode dial no longer matches the mode the camera actually selects. For example, when the dial is set to P, the camera shows A on the screen. How can I troubleshoot or fix this?

If the offset is constant, you may need to take the dial off and put it back on again. It may just pull off, or you may have to prise/peal off a cap and undo a screw.

By a constant offset I mean that a on dial with 4 positions A-D, selecting A would give mode B, B woudl give C... D gives A (or similar)

Start with the simplest checks:

  1. Reset the camera using the two buttons marked with green dots (on the D7000, typically QUAL and exposure compensation).
  2. Update/reinstall the latest firmware in case the camera settings or control logic have become corrupted.

If the problem remains, check whether the mismatch is a consistent one-step offset around the whole dial. For example, P always gives A, A gives S, and so on. If it’s a constant offset, the mode dial itself may have slipped out of alignment.

In that case, the likely fix is mechanical: the dial may need to be removed and refitted in the correct position. Depending on construction, it may pull off, or you may need to remove a cap and a screw first. If you’re not comfortable opening the camera, have a repair technician do it.

If the offset is not consistent, it’s more likely an internal switch or electronics issue and professional service is the safest option.
