I want to recreate an old photo by lining it up on screen while taking a new picture on a Samsung Galaxy S7. The previous image should appear as a temporary overlay for framing, but it should not be included in the saved photo. Ideally it would also work with the front camera. Is there a free Android app or feature for this?

The feature you're looking for is called onion skinning. Available apps are constantly changing. You can search Google Play to find a suitable app.

Yes—what you’re looking for is commonly called onion skinning: showing a previous image as a semi-transparent overlay while composing a new shot. The overlay is only for alignment and is not meant to appear in the saved image. App availability changes over time, so the practical approach is to search Google Play for terms like “onion skin camera” or “photo overlay camera.” Whether it works with the front camera depends on the specific app, so check the app description and reviews before installing.
