Is there a simple 3D tool for creating photography lighting diagrams?

Most lighting-diagram tools I’ve found only show a top-down view, which makes it awkward to indicate height above the floor or objects/light sources stacked vertically. I’m looking for a simple 3D diagramming option for photo lighting setups that can show top and side views, or ideally a movable perspective view of the scene, without needing a full complex 3D package like Blender or Maya.

Assuming you don't want to view actual simulations of lighting, then Google SketchUp might be the right product for you. I haven't used it for lighting diagrams specifically, but by and large it's a pretty easy 3D modelling tool.

Yes—if you mainly need a 3D layout tool rather than a true light simulator, Google SketchUp is a reasonable option. It’s a general-purpose 3D modeling application, but it’s relatively easy to use and can be used to build simple scenes for lighting diagrams. That gives you the advantage of viewing the setup from the top, side, or any custom perspective, which solves the main limitation of flat top-view diagram tools.
