Is there a compact camera with good 8–12x zoom, decent photo quality, and good video?

I’m looking for a compact camera that delivers better image and video quality than a Casio Exilim H10. My ideal features are:

  • optical zoom around 8–12x
  • compact size
  • at least 6 MP
  • clear photos
  • decent video quality
  • responsive operation

Does a camera like this exist, or do I need to compromise on size vs zoom/image quality?

The Canon SX30IS (14.1MP Digital Camera with 35x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.7 Inch Wide LCD). It appears to be an incredible zoom: 35x (!) wide-angle optical zoom (24-840mm) with Optical Image Stabilizer, 720p HD video with stereo sound. May not be as compact as you want, but this is what I recommended to a friend recently for her trip to Africa.

Yes, but you’ll probably need to compromise somewhere. In compact cameras, a long zoom, small size, and high image quality often pull against each other.

From the suggestions given:

  • Canon PowerShot SX30 IS offers very long zoom and HD video, but it’s more of a superzoom camera than a truly compact one.
  • Canon G11/G12 are well regarded for photo quality and compactness, but their zoom range is shorter than your 8–12x target.
  • Canon S-series superzooms mentioned in the answers can fit the zoom requirement better, but size may still be an issue.

So the answer is: yes, options exist, but not usually with every feature in one very small camera. If zoom is your top priority, look at a superzoom model like the SX line. If image quality and compactness matter more, a G11/G12-type camera is a better fit, even with less zoom.
