Is the Manfrotto 190XPROB a good first tripod for a Canon 400D, and which head should I pair with it?

I use a Canon EOS 400D/XTi and want to buy my first tripod. I'm considering the Manfrotto 190XPROB and would like to know if it's a solid choice for an entry-level DSLR. I'm also unsure what type of head would suit it best for general photography.

I have the Manfrotto 190XPROB and it is very good. Obviously it is quite heavy.

I bought a mini ball head which isn't strong enough, I regret not spending enough on the head.

Yes — the Manfrotto 190XPROB is generally a solid first tripod. The community feedback says it is sturdy, versatile, and much more rigid than cheaper aluminium tripods. Its standout feature is the center column that can swing horizontal, which is useful for shooting downward at documents or tabletop subjects.

The tradeoff is weight: several users note that it is fairly heavy, and it is not a full-height tripod. Still, it is tall and stable enough for most uses.

For the head, avoid going too cheap. One answer specifically mentions regretting an underpowered mini ball head. A 3-way head like the Manfrotto 804RC2 is good if you want controlled adjustments and panning, while a ball head or trigger-grip head is better if you want faster repositioning.

If you do not need the horizontal center column feature, the 190XB was noted as a similar option without that feature. Overall, the 190XPROB is a dependable choice for a first tripod as long as you're comfortable with the extra weight and budget appropriately for a decent head.
