Is the Manfrotto 055XPROB a good tripod for travel, and what head should I pair with it?

I’m considering the Manfrotto 055XPROB for a Nikon D90. My total budget for tripod plus ball head is about $300. Most of my photography is while traveling, mainly landscapes and some nature.
The 055XPROB seems solid, but I’m concerned about its weight and portability. Is it a good choice for travel, or would something like the 190 series be easier to carry? Also, what type of ball head would be a good match for this tripod?

I have the 055CXPRO3 which looks identical except that its carbon fibre. It's fantastic, and very lightweight. So if you are after lightweight, consider the CX version. The main weight comes actually with the head, but a magnesium head also takes care of that (I have the MH054M0-Q2).
The combination of the 055CXPRO3 and MH054M0-Q2 is strong, robust, and for what it is, very very lightweight. I can recommend it.

The Manfrotto 055XPROB is generally regarded as a sturdy, solid tripod, but the aluminum version is fairly large and heavy. Based on the community feedback, it’s a good choice if stability matters more than portability, but it may feel cumbersome for air travel, backpacking, or long days on foot.
For travel-oriented landscape and nature use, the 190 series may be the more practical option because it’s easier to transport. If you like the 055 design but want less weight, the carbon-fiber 055 version is much lighter, though typically more expensive.
For the head, a lightweight magnesium ball head was specifically recommended as a good match, and one answer noted that the head can contribute a lot to the overall carry weight.
If you do choose the 055XPROB, a tripod carrying strap can also make it more manageable for walking around.
In short: the 055XPROB is a very capable tripod, but for travel photography its weight is the main downside; a 190-series tripod or a carbon-fiber 055 may be a better fit if portability is your priority.
