I’m a student hobbyist photographer shooting RAW on a Nikon D3200 and considering Adobe Lightroom for editing. I shoot fairly often, but photography is not professional work for me. Is Lightroom really necessary for a hobbyist, or would a free alternative be enough?

I would definitely recommend getting it, but you might want to wait a month or two... Usually close to the launch of the new lightroom you can find it for 60 or 70$.... If you time it right, within 30 days of the official launch you can even get adobe to upgrade you to the newest one. As mentioned in another comment, use the trial and learn how the program works... There are tons of free resources and videos to help you figure it out.

Lightroom can be very useful for a hobbyist who shoots RAW, especially for organizing, editing, and learning a consistent workflow. But based on the answers here, it isn’t strictly necessary.

A good free alternative is darktable, which offers RAW editing and many advanced features. If your goal is simply to process RAW files well without spending money, that may be enough.

If you like Adobe’s workflow, Lightroom is still a strong choice and many photographers find it worth it. One suggestion from the community is to try the free trial first so you can see whether its tools and interface suit you before paying.

So the short answer is: no, Lightroom is not required for a hobbyist, but it can absolutely be worth it if you prefer its workflow and want a polished editing/cataloging toolset.
