Is a 4-week Olympus warranty repair turnaround normal?

My Olympus PEN E-P5 was purchased in the US and has developed an intermittent power-on problem. The store I bought it from sent it to Olympus for warranty repair, and it has been away for four weeks with no update yet. The store says that this is normal and that they can’t do much until Olympus responds. Is a four-week turnaround typical for camera warranty repairs?

Generally 4 weeks for a repair turn-around is minimal. The camera has to be sent, wait to be seen, order the parts, perform the repair, test and ship it back. In many cases, complex parts may need equipment which is not available locally and the camera has to take a trip to Asia and back. That makes it spend 3 or more weeks in transport alone.
Sorry but you will have to be patient. I learned my lesson once after one of my repairs took 16 weeks. Always have a backup camera and back-up lenses for your most common uses. They do not have to be exact duplicates but I find it helps greatly since you immediately know how to use your backup camera and lens.

Yes—four weeks is generally within a normal range for camera warranty repairs. Turnaround often includes shipping to the service center, waiting in the repair queue, diagnosing the issue, ordering parts, completing the repair, testing the camera, and shipping it back. If specialized parts or equipment are needed, the camera may even be sent to another regional or overseas facility, which can add significant transport time. In practice, some repairs take much longer than four weeks, so while the delay is frustrating, it is not unusual. If you rely on your camera regularly, it’s wise to keep a backup body and your most-used lenses available.
