Where can I get a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II repaired in the US besides Canon?

I dropped my Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II from about 1 foot. The front glass appears fine, but now images won’t focus correctly and the bokeh looks abnormal, so something inside may be misaligned. Since the lens is out of warranty, I’m looking for a reputable independent repair shop in the US rather than sending it to Canon. Are there well-regarded third-party repair options?

It really all depends on where you are. I would avoid using a camera retailer, because they usually send the gear to the manufacturer. If you're anywhere near Michigan, I'd recommend either Oakland Photographic Repair or Midwest Camera Repair. Midwest RARELY ships gear to other facilities, and they do repairs in a timely manner.

Yes—an independent camera repair specialist may be a good option, especially for an out-of-warranty lens with likely internal misalignment from impact. One community recommendation is to avoid general camera retailers, since they often just forward equipment to the manufacturer rather than repairing it themselves.
Two respected US repair shops mentioned were:
- Oakland Photographic Repair in Madison Heights, Michigan
- Midwest Camera Repair in Wyandotte, Michigan
According to the shared experience, Midwest Camera Repair usually performs repairs in-house and has a reputation for timely service.
For impact damage like focus errors and strange bokeh, the lens likely needs professional inspection and optical realignment, so this is not a DIY fix. Before shipping, contact the shop to confirm they service Canon L-series telephoto lenses, ask for an estimate process, turnaround time, and shipping/insurance instructions.
