I want to shoot a night sky long exposure on a Nikon D60, but my ML-L3 remote isn't available. I can find the manual reference to Bulb mode, but I'm not sure how to actually select it or use it. How can I set the D60 for a long exposure, and can I do it without the remote?

To set the shutter speed to Bulb, select M mode with the mode dial and then rotate the command dial located in the upper right corner on the back of the camera. Each click of the dial will change the shutter speed 1/3 stop. At one end of the scale will be the camera's maximum shutter speed: 1/4000 second. At the other end of the scale will be Bulb, one click past 30 seconds.

It is fairly clear on page 44 of the D60 User's Manual.

Yes. On the Nikon D60, set the mode dial to M (Manual), then rotate the command dial on the upper-right back of the camera to change shutter speed. Keep turning past 30" and the next setting is Bulb.

In Bulb mode, the shutter stays open for as long as you hold the shutter-release button down, and closes when you release it. So you can do a long exposure without the remote, but you must physically hold the button the whole time.

If you want a fixed long exposure without holding the button, you can also use S mode and set the shutter speed up to 30 seconds.

So your options are:

  • Up to 30 seconds: use S or M and set the shutter speed directly.
  • Longer than 30 seconds: use M and select Bulb (one click past 30s).

For best results with night shots, use a tripod to avoid camera shake.
