How do I return the active focus point to the center on a Nikon D90?

On my Nikon D90, I set the AF area mode to single-point with the center point selected. But when I look through the viewfinder, the active focus point is still showing on the left instead of in the center. Am I missing a setting, or could something be wrong with the camera?

It sounds like you've gotten into "single focus point" mode, so now you can just use the d-pad on the back to move that highlighted focus point around in the viewfinder. The center of the d-pad returns the focus point conveniently to the center.

This is most likely not a camera glitch. On the D90, if you’re in single-point AF mode, the active focus point can be moved manually with the multi-selector (the directional pad) on the back of the camera. If it’s showing on the left, it was probably moved there accidentally.
Use the multi-selector to move the focus point back to the center. Pressing the center of the pad returns it to the center point quickly.
If autofocus seems inconsistent in general, also make sure the lens is clean, since smudges or oily fingerprints can sometimes affect focusing behavior.
