How do I fully reset a Nikon D40 before selling it?

I’m preparing to sell my Nikon D40 and want to return it as close to factory defaults as possible. The two-button reset restarts the camera, but items like my image comment and some shooting/optimization settings remain. Using the Custom Settings menu reset also doesn’t seem to clear everything. Is there a more complete reset on the D40, and what do the available reset options actually reset?

According to the manual for D40 the two-button reset does not affect custom settings (p38).

The Custom Settings Menu has another Reset option to clear them (p74).

pp113-114 describe default settings and what gets reset with various reset controls.

There is also a tiny low-level reset switch next to the USB port (p108) -- to be used when the camera completely stalls (freezes).

The D40 does not have a single “wipe everything” factory-reset command.

On this camera, the two-button reset only restores certain shooting settings; it does not clear all custom settings or user-entered data. The Custom Settings Menu has its own separate Reset option for custom settings. The manual also lists which settings are affected by each reset type and which defaults apply.

If items like the image comment remain, that’s because they are not cleared by the basic two-button reset. You’ll need to reset settings from the relevant menu sections individually where applicable.

There is also a small low-level reset near the USB port, but that is intended for when the camera freezes or stalls, not as a general factory restore for sale prep.

Best approach: use the standard reset options, then manually check and clear personal data such as image comments and any remaining custom menu settings.
