Can I add copyright metadata on a Nikon D5200 using Image Comment?

I want to add identifying copyright information to images from my Nikon D5200. I’ve seen instructions for Nikon cameras with a dedicated Copyright Information menu item, but my D5200 doesn’t appear to have that option in the Setup menu. If I enter text such as my name or a copyright notice in the camera’s Image Comment setting, will that be written into the photo metadata and serve a similar purpose?

Every camera have different setting for such settings.

For example, on Canon DSLR:

Canon Copyright Info

On Nikon DSLR:

Nikon Copyright Info

On some camera it's called image comment:

Nikon D5200 EXIF

Every camera have different layout so you might want to refer to the manual. Are you using point-to-shoot? Chances are the device doesn't have the option.

Yes. On cameras that don’t offer a separate Copyright Information menu item, the Image Comment setting can still embed text in the image metadata/EXIF. If your D5200 writes the comment into the file metadata, it can serve as an identifying marker similar to a copyright field, even if it’s labeled differently in the menu.

Camera menu names vary by model and brand, so the exact option is not the same on every camera. The safest approach is to check your D5200 manual for how Nikon labels and stores this information on that model.

Keep in mind that metadata can help identify ownership, but it can also be removed later in editing or export. It’s useful as part of your workflow, but not a guarantee.
