How do I change a Nikon D7200 from RAW (.NEF) back to JPEG in Manual mode?

My Nikon D7200 is saving photos as .NEF files when I'm shooting in Manual mode. I want it to save JPEGs again and be able to review the images normally on the camera screen. How do I change the image quality setting on the D7200?

"Image quality can be set by pressing the X (T) button and rotating the main command dial until the desired setting is displayed in the information display." (page: 79)

"Image quality can also be adjusted using the Image quality option in the photo shooting menu (page: 268)."

I found this in the manual for your camera! You can download it here:

Edit: Also, in the manual, there are pictures of the buttons, so it might be clearer what "pressing the X (T)" - means while checking it up inside of it :)

And a tip! When reading the manual in PDF-format, you can press CTRL + F (or cmd + F if you are on a Mac) and search for a part of what you are looking for, like "RAW". And then just press Enter til you find the correct part!

Manual mode does not force RAW. Your D7200’s image quality setting has been changed to RAW (.NEF) or RAW+JPEG.

Set it back to JPEG by changing Image quality on the camera:

  • Press the X (T) button and rotate the main command dial until the desired quality appears in the information display, or
  • Go to the Photo Shooting Menu > Image quality and choose a JPEG option such as JPEG Fine.

If you want smaller or larger JPEGs, also check the Image size setting nearby in the menu.

You should still be able to review RAW images on the camera, but switching to JPEG will make your files save as .jpg instead of .nef.

If needed, the D7200 manual covers this under Image quality.
