How can I transfer pick/reject flags from a Lightroom 3 collection back to the folder?

In Lightroom 3, pick/reject flags are local to a collection. I selected picks inside a collection and then wanted those same selections reflected in the main folder where the photos actually live. I don’t see a built-in way to copy collection-local flags back to the folder. Is there any better workaround than temporarily using keywords, labels, or color labels as global markers and then reapplying the picks in the folder?

Temporarily tagging them is probably the best move. I've hit this same frustration before and that's how I moved on.

In Lightroom 3, there isn’t a built-in way to transfer collection-local pick/reject flags back to the source folder. The practical workaround is to use something global—such as keywords, labels, or color labels—as a temporary marker, then go to the folder and apply your picks there.
That limitation was changed in Lightroom 4, where flag status became global rather than collection-specific. So if you need this behavior regularly, upgrading is the real fix; otherwise, temporary tagging/labeling is the best available method in Lightroom 3.
