How can I tether a Canon 6D to a laptop or tablet for live image review during a shoot?

I want images from my Canon 6D to appear on a laptop or tablet as I shoot, so other people on set can review them and suggest changes while we’re still shooting. I don’t need full remote camera control—mainly reliable image transfer for review.

I’ve looked at options like CamRanger and Eye‑Fi, but I’m also wondering whether a simple wired connection is possible, and what software is needed. What are the practical options for tethered shooting with a Canon 6D, especially to a laptop or iPad/tablet?

What you are looking for is called tethered shooting. With a laptop or a USB OTG enabled Android device, you need nothing more than a USB cable and some (free) software. E.g. Canon's EOS utility, or Lightroom, on the computer.

With the iPad, you are out of luck in this regard, AFAIK, apart from your mentioned EyeFi solution.

What you want is generally called tethered shooting.

For a laptop, the simplest option is usually a USB cable plus software. Canon’s EOS Utility supports tethered shooting, and Lightroom can also work for this on a computer.

If your camera is the Canon 6D, it also has built-in Wi‑Fi, and Canon provides free software/apps for computers and mobile devices, so you may not need extra hardware such as a CamRanger just to review images remotely.

For tablets, iPad support is more limited for true tethered shooting via cable. Based on the answers here, wireless options like Eye‑Fi were one workaround, but experiences vary. One responder reported very reliable Eye‑Fi performance to a computer, though not specifically to an iPad.

So the main practical choices are:

  • laptop + USB cable + EOS Utility/Lightroom
  • Canon 6D built-in Wi‑Fi + Canon’s software/apps
  • Eye‑Fi as a wireless alternative, with mixed user confidence

If you only need image review and not remote control, start with Canon’s built-in Wi‑Fi or a direct USB tether to a laptop.
