How can I tell whether a puncture is only in my EOS M10 screen protector or in the actual LCD?

My Canon EOS M10 has a screen protector fitted. After getting the camera back from a friend, I found scratches on the protector and a small puncture near the left side of the display, in the black border area. What is the best way to check whether the damage is only in the protector or if the actual LCD underneath is damaged?

Take of the screen protector and inspect the condition of the LCD screen. It is scratched up and probably due for replacement anyway.
In the future the social problem, to the degree it is a problem, can be avoided by not lending out equipment or deciding that cameras are more easily repaired or replaced than friendships.
If the screen is damaged, significant responsibility for that damage lies with the manufacturer and retailer of the screen protector since it has failed to do its job.

The practical way to confirm it is to remove the screen protector and inspect the LCD directly. If the mark disappears with the protector removed, the damage was only to the protector. If the puncture or scratches are still visible on the bare screen, the LCD surface is damaged.
Since the protector is already scratched and punctured, it’s likely worth replacing it anyway. Check the screen with the camera on as well: if the image displays normally and there are no dead areas, discoloration, or touch issues, the damage may be cosmetic rather than affecting the display itself.
A protector is meant to take this kind of wear, so damage to the protector alone does not necessarily mean the LCD was harmed.
