How can I shoot indoor photos in dim rooms with an Olympus OM-10?

I'm new to film photography and want to photograph friends indoors at night so the subject is lit while the background stays fairly dark. I'm using an Olympus OM-10 and I'm unsure whether it has a built-in flash or if I need external lighting. What's the best way to achieve this look with this camera?

The Olympus OM-10 does not have a built in flash. You need an external one.
I do not suggest getting into flash lighting with a film body. This is where the ability of digital cameras to see the result immediately truly shines (pun intended).
The OM-10 has no control over the flash. You are in full manual in terms of flash and have no idea what you are doing until you develop the film. Human eyes adapt to darkness, which can make it very hard to guess the right flash settings (at least without experience). You can calculate them, with the guide number and the distance - which you'd have to estimate or do you want to get out a tape measure? While reading that last sentence at least two beautiful candid moments went by uncaptured and are now gone. Forever. Yeah, you have to do a lot of thinking quickly if you are going down that route.

The Olympus OM-10 does not have a built-in flash, so you’ll need an external flash or another light source if you want that classic “subject lit, background dark” look.
With the OM-10, flash use is much less forgiving than on digital cameras because you can’t review results immediately. You’ll generally be working manually, estimating or calculating exposure based on flash power, distance, and film speed. That makes candid indoor shooting harder, especially while learning.
If you want to stay with film, an external flash is the direct way to get this look. A non-flash option is to use higher-ISO film and rely on available light, but the result will look different: more natural room mood, less separation between subject and background, and more challenging exposure in very dim rooms.
So the short answer is:
- No built-in flash on the OM-10
- Yes, you need an external flash for that effect
- Expect a steeper learning curve with film than with digital for indoor flash photography
