I have a roll of 35mm positive film rather than negatives, and a lab told me they couldn't make individual prints from it. Is it still possible to get prints made from positive film, and what is the usual process today?

The path of least resistance here is surely to just have the film scanned, or do it yourself, and print the images digitally.

Yes. 35mm positive film (slides/transparencies) can still be turned into prints.
The lab likely meant they aren’t equipped for that workflow, not that it’s impossible. Historically, prints were made directly from slides using reversal print processes such as Ilfochrome/Type R, but today the normal method is to scan the film and print from the digital file.
Typical workflow:
- Have the slides/film professionally scanned, or scan them yourself.
- Edit/retouch the digitized images if needed.
- Make prints from those digital files, either at a lab or at home.
If you specifically want a traditional photographic print, that can still be made from a digital file by some labs, but scanning first is still the usual modern route.
So the practical answer is: find a lab that offers slide/transparency scanning or printing from slides, rather than one that only handles negative-to-print services.
