How can I find people to model for portrait practice?

I’m getting more interested in portrait photography and want to move beyond self-portraits and photographing friends and family. I’d like to do more intentional portrait sessions with some setup for background and lighting, rather than candid street portraits.

I’m not shooting commercially, so I don’t need professional models or a big budget. What are practical ways to find people willing to sit for portrait sessions when I’m still building experience?

Model Mayhem is used well known website to find models. You can find not-so-well established models who will model for free in exchange for head shots. It is a good way to start out.

Another option would be to join a local portraiture meetup group in your area. They normally share the cost of the studio and the model when doing a shoot.

A practical way to start is with people who are easiest to approach: friends, relatives, acquaintances, or people you’ve already photographed at events. Many people are flattered to be asked, and referrals from previous subjects can help you find more willing participants.

You can also try model-network sites such as Model Mayhem or OneModelPlace, where newer models may collaborate in exchange for portraits or headshots. Results can vary by area, so treat these as one option rather than the only one.

Another good route is a local portrait or photography meetup group. These often organize shoots where members share the cost of a model and studio, which keeps expenses low and gives you experience working in a more structured setup.

If you already have a social page or portfolio, people who follow your work may also be open to collaborating.

In short: start with your existing network, ask directly, use referrals, and supplement that with meetups or model directories if needed.
