How can I extend a photo’s edges to fill a larger canvas in GIMP?

I want to increase the canvas size of an image slightly without noticeably stretching or distorting the main subject. I’ve seen tutorials where the canvas is expanded and the new empty areas are filled by extending nearby image content so the result is hard to detect. In Photoshop this looks similar to Content-Aware Fill. Is there an equivalent way to do this in GIMP?

A quick Google search led me to a tool in GIMP called the "Resynthesizer Tool," which is apparently GIMP's version of Photoshop's Content-Aware Fill. Here's a video tutorial on using the Resynthesizer Tool. Hope that helps.

Yes. In GIMP, the closest equivalent to Photoshop’s Content-Aware Fill is the Resynthesizer plugin/tool. The general workflow is to enlarge the canvas, select the empty area around the edges, and use Resynthesizer to synthesize matching content from nearby parts of the image. This can often extend backgrounds or edges with minimal visible distortion, especially if the surrounding texture is simple.
It won’t be perfect for every image, but for small canvas extensions it’s a common solution and is the technique most similar to what you described.
