I need a safe way to charge a Canon PowerShot S95 battery from a car cigarette-lighter/12V socket. Is there a reliable in-car charging option, or is it better to use a 12V power inverter with the standard Canon battery charger? I’d also be interested in any practical way to charge from AA batteries.

I'd recommend going with a decently rated power inverter: One example would be this "can sized" version from Rosewill.
That way you can use it with the standard charger, plus it's not a single purpose item.

A practical answer from the community is to use a decent-quality 12V power inverter and plug your normal Canon battery charger into it. That lets you keep using the charger designed for the S95 battery, which is generally the safest and simplest option, and the inverter is useful for other devices too.
If safety is your main concern, avoid cheap, poorly rated charging accessories and choose a well-reviewed inverter from a reputable brand. Then use the camera’s standard charger rather than an unknown third-party battery charger.
No solid AA-battery charging solution was provided in the answers, so the best-supported recommendation here is the 12V inverter approach.
