I’m taking a Canon 50D camping and want to recharge the battery from a car’s auxiliary/12V power outlet. Is this possible, and what equipment would I need?

You can buy dedicated accessories for charging all kinds of stuff, or you can spend a little more and get a car converter 12V -> 110V, or 220V, depending on what your chargers need.

Then you can connect just about any standard device to it, as long as its current (wattage) requirements are not too high.

Here is one similar to one I have and it came in handy many times - most notably when camping:

Yes. You have two practical options:

  1. Use a dedicated 12V car charging solution for the battery charger. For the 50D, Canon offered a CB-570 car battery cable for use with the CG-570 battery charger. A compatible third-party car adapter/charger can also work.

  2. Use a 12V-to-AC power inverter, then plug your normal wall charger into it.

A dedicated car charger/cable is the more efficient option because it avoids converting the car’s DC power to AC and then back to DC again. An inverter is more flexible since you can power other devices too, but it wastes a bit more power.

So yes, charging from the car is possible; you’ll need either a charger/car adapter made for your battery system or a suitable power inverter for your standard charger.
