I’m planning a 14-day river trip and would like to recharge a Canon EOS Rebel T4i battery from a USB power source, possibly a solar setup. Can the T4i charge the battery while it’s inside the camera, or does the battery have to be removed and charged externally? If USB charging is possible, would it require a special charger rather than just a cable?

As far as I know no Canon DSLR can do this (charge battery via USB).
But you can buy additional batteries and charge them via solar panel. There are different options for USB chargers, here is one example for LP-E8.

No. The Canon EOS Rebel T4i cannot charge its battery in-camera over USB. It does not have internal battery-charging circuitry, so a USB cable alone will not charge the LP-E8 battery.
To recharge batteries for a long trip, you’ll need to remove the battery and use an external charger made for the LP-E8. If you want to use USB power or solar, the practical route is a compatible external USB battery charger, which could then be powered by a suitable USB source or solar setup.
For a 14-day trip, extra batteries are also a sensible backup.
