Can a Nikon Coolpix P7000 charge its battery over USB?

I’m getting a used Nikon Coolpix P7000 and want to know whether connecting it by USB to a computer or USB wall charger will recharge the battery in-camera, or if charging only works with the separate external battery charger. I’m also concerned because some reports say firmware v1.2 may reject certain older third-party batteries after the battery is removed.

As far as I can tell from the manual, the camera won't charge from the USB port. To charge efficiently this would require USB-PD (Power Delivery) and this standard is from 2013 (so after the camera release) and demands USB-C connectors.

There are indeed complaints on the web that the new firmware won't work with third-party batteries. But this means the third-party batteries from 2012. 13 years later, the same battery is still used in many Nikon products and vendors have had time to upgrade their products. On Amazon I see reputable vendors such as Wasabi selling batteries advertised as compatible with the P7000.

No—the P7000 does not appear to support in-camera battery charging over its USB port. Based on the manual and the camera’s age, charging is intended to be done with the external charger after removing the battery.

The firmware concern is real in general: some older third-party batteries were reported as incompatible with newer firmware. However, those reports date back many years, and newer replacement batteries sold as compatible with the P7000 may already account for this. If you need a spare or replacement, look for a reputable battery specifically advertised as compatible with the P7000.
