How can I attach a camera strap to the tripod socket on the bottom of my camera?

I have a Nikon D5000 and bought a new strap, but I’m interested in using a sling-style setup that attaches to the tripod socket underneath the camera. Is there a threaded bolt, loop, or adapter that lets me attach one or both ends of a strap to the tripod mount? I’m looking for a practical solution such as a screw-in loop, spigot plus carabiner, or a quick-release plate that can also serve as a strap attachment point.

I have improvised my own asymmetric strap using a camera bag strap, this Manfrotto spigot and a carabiner like this. Not pretty, but it works and is relatively cheap.

Yes. A common way to do this is to use a tripod-socket accessory rather than attaching the strap directly to a plain screw.

Options mentioned include:

  • a screw-in spigot plus a carabiner/strap connection
  • a quick-release plate that includes a ring or attachment point
  • a dedicated adapter such as a Camdapter, which can combine a strap mount with a quick-release plate

A quick-release plate can be a practical choice because it gives you a secure mounting point and may work with your tripod system too. One caution: if the strap connection is on a ring attached to the screw, the ring may rotate with the screw, which can increase the chance of loosening. Tightening it well improves friction, but a purpose-built adapter or plate is generally better than a simple improvised bolt.

So, yes—look for a tripod-socket strap adapter, quick-release plate with strap loop, or a plate/spigot plus carabiner setup.
