I want to add the same caption/description to a group of photos in Lightroom. When I select multiple images and edit the Caption field in the Metadata panel, it only updates one photo. What is the correct way to apply the same metadata text to all selected photos?

If you want to add/change meta information to more than one photo (when more than one is selected) you should select "Selected Photos" in Library module, specific meta window:

Unfortunately this setting is not stored in the library data so you should set it every time you start new instance of Lightroom (even with existing library)

In Lightroom’s Library module, use the Metadata panel with multiple photos selected and make sure the panel is set to Selected Photos rather than editing only the active image. Then enter the caption/description and Lightroom will apply it to all selected files.
If it only affects one photo, the Metadata panel is likely not in the correct mode. One caveat mentioned by users: this setting may not persist between Lightroom sessions, so you may need to reselect Selected Photos when you reopen Lightroom.
