Canon Speedlite 550EX powers on and shows ready light but will not fire

My Canon Speedlite 550EX turns on and the red ready light comes on, but it will not fire when I press the pilot/test button or when mounted on my Canon Rebel. The camera recognizes the flash, and I have already tried fresh batteries. What could cause this, and is there anything else I should try before seeking repair?

This is a guess, but is it possible that the flash bulb itself is dead? It sounds like the electronics are working properly and the capacitor is charging (what the red light indicates) but it sounds like it can't discharge. If the blub is blown, then it isn't going to be possible for it to complete a circuit and discharge the flash. The 550 is an older unit, so it makes me wonder if that could possibly be the problem.

I don't see any more specific details in the troubleshooting guide from Canon, so it might also be worth calling them to see if they can confirm what could cause the behavior you are seeing.

I would also try removing the flash from the camera all together, putting it in manual mode and trying to see if you can get it to fire at all, but if it isn't firing at all and is indicating charge, then something would seem to be wrong with the bulb itself (or other problem down-stream from the capacitor, such as the circuitry regulating the discharge).

If the 550EX powers on and the red ready light comes on, that suggests the flash electronics are at least charging the capacitor. Since it still will not fire from the pilot/test button or on the camera, a likely cause is a failed flash tube/bulb or another internal discharge fault.

A good basic check is to remove it from the camera, set it to manual, and try the test button again. If it still never fires, the issue is probably inside the flash rather than camera communication or batteries.

Because the 550EX is an older unit, internal component failure is plausible. At that point, Canon service or a qualified repair shop would be the next step. If Canon’s troubleshooting guide does not cover this symptom, contacting Canon support is also reasonable to confirm whether repair is practical.
