Canon EOS 50D freezes when saving photos and in Live View

My Canon EOS 50D has started freezing whenever I take a photo. The red write light stays on, the camera becomes unresponsive, and even the power switch will not turn it off until I remove the battery. It also freezes when I enter Live View, right as the image begins to appear on the LCD. What could cause this, and what should I try before sending it for repair?

Start with the simplest causes: try a different CF card, since a failing card can make the camera hang while writing. If possible, test without the card by shooting tethered to a computer; if that works, the card or CF slot is the likely issue.
Also check the camera firmware. Early EOS 50D firmware versions were known to have freezing problems like this, and updating to the latest available firmware may fix it.
Less commonly, a lens can trigger odd body lockups. Try another lens, or remove the current lens and test again. If one specific lens seems to cause it, the lens may need service.
If a different CF card, firmware update, and lens swap do not help, the camera body likely needs professional repair.
