Canon EOS 40D meters incorrectly after focusing screen replacement

After replacing the focusing screen in my Canon EOS 40D, the camera’s metering is now badly off when composing through the viewfinder. In both auto and manual focus, it suggests extremely long exposures through the eyepiece, but metering in Live View seems normal. I’ve already tried changing lenses, removing the battery and memory card for a while, and resetting the camera to factory defaults, but the problem remains. Is there a camera setting that must be changed after installing a different focusing screen?

Did you change the custom function option to select that you're using a different focussing screen?
In my 50d and 6d there's that custom function to pick a focus screen from the EF-D or EF-A, etc. They say that depending on the focus screen exposure stuff varies. So if you haven't done that then maybe that's why it's bogus.

Yes. On Canon DSLRs that support interchangeable focusing screens, there is usually a custom function to tell the camera which screen is installed. Different focusing screens can affect viewfinder metering, so if the camera is still set for the original screen, exposure readings can be very wrong through the optical viewfinder while Live View remains normal.
Check the 40D’s custom functions/menu for the focusing screen setting and make sure it matches the screen you installed. If it’s set incorrectly, that is the most likely cause of the huge exposure error you’re seeing.
