Why does my Canon PowerShot show black, striped, badly exposed images even after a reset?

My Canon PowerShot A430 worked normally for a few months, but after changing some color/highlight settings the photos began coming out very dark with strange striping or embossed-looking artifacts. Resetting the camera to factory defaults several times has not fixed it. Automatic mode gives poor results, and most other modes show the problem more clearly. Is this likely to be a setting issue, or does it suggest a hardware fault such as the image sensor?

It most definitely is a image sensor/CCD/CMOS issue. These tend to fail over time due to heat, which could explain why it worked the first couple of months.
It also isn't exposing properly (due to faulty CCD) hence the swirls and exposure of half a second.
There was a time where they recalled their image sensors/CCDs but it was a while ago. It might be costly to repair now.

This is most likely a hardware fault, not a menu setting. The answers point to a failing image sensor (CCD/CMOS), which can cause severe underexposure, strange striping/swirls, and corrupted-looking images. Some of the dramatic examples may also include long shutter speeds or special color effects, but the ordinary sample image suggests the camera itself is malfunctioning.
Because the problem remains after multiple factory resets, a settings mistake is much less likely. On older compact cameras, sensor failure was a known issue, and heat/age can make it appear gradually.
What to do:
- Try full auto mode in bright daylight to confirm it still happens.
- Remove any scene effects or color modes if possible.
- If the artifacts remain, the camera likely needs sensor repair or replacement.
On a thrift-store-era compact like the A430, repair is often not economical unless you want to do it for sentimental or hobby reasons.
