How can I clean dust from a DSLR focusing screen without damaging it?

After changing lenses frequently at an event, I noticed dust and small fibers visible through the viewfinder of my Nikon D3100. The spots do not appear in photos, and the mirror looks clean, so I suspect the dust is on the focusing screen. I already tried a brush, blower, and cleaning around the eyepiece and mirror area, but that seemed to make the viewfinder look even dirtier. What is the safest way to clean a focusing screen, and when should I stop and have it serviced instead?

Most SLR's have removable/replaceable focusing screens, and I gather the D3100 is no exception. There are instructions here for removing and cleaning your focusing screen. Be aware the the screens are usually plastic and quite fragile. On the other hand, if you really screw it up, a new one won't set you back all that much.

If the dust is on the focusing screen, the safest first step is to use a strong hand blower (for example, a rocket blower) with the camera held lens-mount down so loosened dust can fall out. In most cases, that’s as far as you should go.
Focusing screens are usually plastic and very delicate, so brushing, wiping with paper, or scrubbing can damage them easily. Dust on the focusing screen will not show up in your photos, only in the viewfinder, so it’s often best to leave minor specks alone.
If your camera’s focusing screen is removable, you may be able to remove it and clean it very carefully, but this is risky unless you follow the camera’s instructions closely. If blower cleaning doesn’t help, the safest option is to have a repair shop clean it. Replacement screens are generally possible if one gets damaged, but avoiding damage is better than trying aggressive cleaning.
