I got some hair and dust onto the focusing screen of my Canon 550D while traveling. I already tried using a normal lens cloth, but that seemed to make it worse. What is the safest way to clean the focusing screen, and should I attempt it myself or have it serviced?

Well, first I should mention that dust on the focusing screen has no effect on the image quality or the exposure metering, so for that sake there is no need to clean it. On the other hand the dust may get loose and get onto the sensor, so it's a good preventive measure tog get the worst dust away at least.

To clean it, you should first turn the camera off, to reduce the static electricity. A dust blower is good for removing dust. A brush can also be useful, but the drawback is that they tend to lose bristles now and again, which adds to the matter that you want to remove.

Dust on the focusing screen usually does not affect image quality or exposure metering, so cleaning it is often optional unless it bothers you in the viewfinder. If you do clean it, start gently: turn the camera off first to reduce static, then use a hand blower to remove loose dust. A soft brush may help, but brushes can shed bristles and create more debris. Avoid wiping the focusing screen with a lens cloth, since it can make things worse or damage the delicate surface. If needed, the focusing screen can be removed and cleaned with a blower, but this can easily introduce more dust or cause damage if done carelessly. If you’re not confident, the safest option is to take the camera to a repair shop or service center.
