Canon EOS 100D/SL1 focusing screen fell out — can the camera still be used?

I have a Canon EOS 100D/SL1. While changing lenses, the focusing screen fell out. The camera still powers on and takes photos, although the viewfinder image may be affected. The screen appears to have come out with its metal carrier attached. Do I need to replace it, and is that something a user can do on this model, or does it require service? Can the camera still be used in the meantime?

Your focus screen fell out with its' metal carrier ring attached? If that is actually the case then the focus screen cannot be replaced w/o a major service... it will almost certainly be cheaper to replace it buying used.

But I do not see any reason that you could not use it via live-view photography (LCD screen). It sounds like that is how you normally use it anyway.

If the focusing screen came out with the metal carrier/ring attached, this is generally not considered a simple user-replaceable part on the 100D/SL1. In that case, proper repair would likely require major service, and depending on repair cost, replacing the camera body used may be more economical.

The camera can still work, because the focusing screen mainly affects the optical viewfinder experience rather than image capture itself. So if you use Live View on the rear LCD, you may still be able to shoot normally. The main issue will be using the optical viewfinder accurately.

If you want the viewfinder restored to normal, professional service is the safest option.
