Canon 600D shows Err 70 with a new SanDisk Ultra 32GB SDHC card

My Canon 600D / Rebel T3i works normally with other SDHC cards, but a new SanDisk Ultra 32GB SDHC causes "Err 70" when I try to format it in-camera, even with low-level format enabled. The camera has already been updated to firmware 1.0.2, and the card can be read, written, and formatted on a computer and in another Canon compact camera. Does this point to a compatibility problem, a bad card, or a fault with the camera?

A 32GB SanDisk Ultra SDHC card should generally be compatible with a Canon 600D, so this is unlikely to be a simple incompatibility issue.

Based on the answers, the most likely possibilities are:

  • the camera firmware needed updating (you’ve already done that),
  • the card’s formatting/partitioning is confusing the camera, or
  • the card itself is faulty even if another device can read it.

What to try:

  1. Make sure the card is formatted as FAT32, not NTFS.
  2. If normal formatting on a computer doesn’t help, completely wipe the card first (for example, writing zeros to the whole card, not just a partition), then reformat it.
  3. If wiping the card produces input/output errors, the card is bad.
  4. If other SDHC cards work fine in the 600D but this one still fails after a full wipe/reformat, the evidence points more to a bad or problematic card than to the camera.

Since your camera works with other cards, the camera itself is less likely to be the problem.

I would check the firmware of the camera. I had a T2i with the same error and once i updated its firmware, the issue went away. My T4i doesnt have this issue as it came with SD, SDHC, and SDXC support. another good location to look is on the canon support pages for the errors you get.

for the T3i support and drivers, i would start at http://www.canon.ca/inetCA/serviceDetail?m=load&id=45&sid=7&mid=2200828&type=D&opt=1
