I need to update a Canon EOS-1Ds to firmware version 1.0.3 so it can recognize CompactFlash cards larger than 2 GB. The manual says the firmware update must be performed using a CF card between 8 MB and 2 GB. Can a larger CF card still be used for the update if it is formatted appropriately, or is an older small-capacity card required?

I've now successfully upgraded the firmware in my EOS-1Ds using a 8 GB CF card that was formatted in camera to a 2 GB FAT16 partition. The card used was a Trancend CompactFlash 133x 8 GB.

Yes — a larger CF card can work for the EOS-1Ds firmware update if it is formatted by the camera to a 2 GB FAT16 partition. One reported successful update used an 8 GB Transcend CompactFlash card after formatting it in-camera so the camera saw a 2 GB FAT16 volume.

So you likely do not need to find an old small-capacity card, provided the larger card can be formatted in a way the camera accepts for the update. The key point is not the physical card size alone, but that the camera can access the firmware file from a compatible partition/format during the update.
