Can Windows XP import photos from an older Canon Rebel over USB, or do I need Canon software?

I connected an older Canon Rebel to a Windows XP PC with a USB cable. The camera appears in My Computer, but it does not mount the CompactFlash card as a normal drive, and double-clicking it does not show the photos. Do older Canon Rebels require Canon software to transfer images, or should Windows XP be able to access them directly? If there is a camera setting involved, what should it be?

The Compact Flash card should be readable by Windows, as it is in Windows format. Try taking the card out and plugging into a CF card reader. No drivers should be required to read the card or the camera. Make sure the camera can read the card and there are images on the card.
Edit: On the Rebel, go into Menu, and check Setup menu tab (1 or 2, don't recall and depends on exact model) If communication in the camera is set to "normal" you can only download with the Canon software. If it's set to "PTP" you can download using Win XP. Make sure its set to 'PTP".

You usually do not need special software just to get the photos, but older Canon Rebels may not appear as a normal removable drive over USB.
Best option: remove the CompactFlash card and use a CF card reader. Windows XP should read the card directly, and this avoids camera/driver issues.
If you want to transfer over USB, check the camera’s communication/transfer setting. On some Rebels, if communication is set to "Normal," downloads may require Canon software. If it is set to "PTP" (or sometimes a mass-storage/computer mode on other cameras), Windows XP can usually import the images.
Also confirm the camera itself can read the card and that there are actually images on it.
So: no special software is necessarily required, but using a card reader is the simplest and most reliable method, and if using USB, the camera may need to be set to PTP rather than Normal.
